CARNEGIE MUSEUM COLLECTION

On Tuesday evening, April 2nd, your editor and several
E-Sylum subscribers attended a meeting of the Western
Pennsylvania Numismatic Society. This was a special
meeting, held on the premises of the Carnegie Museum
of Natural History in Pittsburgh. One of our members,
John Burns, had scouted ahead and selected a few choice
items from the numismatic collection for viewing. Looking
at fine coins and medals is one of the primal pleasures of
numismatics. A few of the highlights were:

Carnegie Hero Medal specimen, in gold
  Paquet's medal of General Meade
  Pistrucci's Waterloo medal in bronze
Heeren Brothers 50th Anniversary medal in bronze
  Japanese Gold oban
Scottish Carnegie Hero Medal in bronze
  Chinese Knife money
Furst's medal for Capt. Jesse D. Elliott for the Defeat
of the British Fleet on Lake Erie, 1813
  Yap stone money (small size)
Bryan Money 1896 in cast iron

My personal favorite was an offbeat item that looks like it
had been shot through with a bullet, for good reason. The
notes say: "Western Pennsylvania Numismatic Society 1878
medal "shot the hole with a rifle by Dr. Carver during the
time of the Pittsburgh Exposition by being thrown in the air"

The Pistrucci Waterloo medal was a sight to behold. There's
enough engraving on that one piece for fifty medals. No
wonder the dies took thirty-three years to complete. The
museum copy is probably one of the Pinches reductions
(see the Featured Web Site for more information and an
  illustration of the medal).
