ANSWER: LYMAN LOW'S JULY 1903 CATALOG 1892-O MICRO HALF INFO FOUNDLast week Mark Borckardt wrote:I am researching the Eliasberg-Friend 1892-O Micro O half
dollar, that J.M. Clapp purchased from Lyman H. Low in July 1903, probably
at auction. If any reader has a copy of Low's July 1903 auction catalog, I
would appreciate knowing the lot number and actual text of that particular
coin. The Clapp Notebook indicates a purchase price of $2.25.
Well, E-Sylum readers came through in spades on this one. Mark writes: Four people responded to my request for information -
thanks to Karl Moulton, David Hirt, Jim Neiswinter and David Fanning.
Here's Dave Fanning's response: The 1892 micro-O half dollar that Mark Borchardt asks
about is lot 969 in Low's July 15-16, 1903 auction, and did indeed sell
for $2.25. Here are images of the micro and normal "O" mintmarks from
the the CoinFacts.com web site. -Editor Wayne Homren, Editor The Numismatic Bibliomania Society is a non-profit organization promoting numismatic literature. See our web site at coinbooks.org.
