LUMAN BURR CIVIL WAR SUTLER APPOINTMENT DOCUMENT

Duane Feisel writes:

This appears to be a very significant Civil War document that would appeal to a wide audience: "1864 Civil War Camp Douglas Sutler Appointment - Signed by Brig. Genl W. W. Orme." Perhaps it would be of interest to some of the readership of The E-Sylum.

Thanks. Below is the text of the appointment letter. Sutler tokens and scrip are important Civil War numismatic collectibles. Don't let this item sell too cheaply! If you have any interest, be sure to bid. As of press time, the high bid was under $50. -Editor

Sutler appointment Chicago 1864 Headquarters Post of Chicago
March 30” 1864
Whereas the appointment of a sutler for the Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas has been permitted by the War Department it is hereby certified that under said permission I have this day appointed Luman Burr to said Sutlership – And he will discharge the duties as such Sutler regarding all the orders governing the camp, and will hold such position until otherwise ordered by the War Department.
(SD) W.W. Orme

I located a record of a 25 cent scrip note from Luman Burr in Early Illinois Paper Money by R. Edward Davis, a reprint from Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine. There is also a record and image of his final resting place at www.findagrave.com. The home he built in 1864 still stands as a bed and breakfast (Burr House) near downtown Bloomington, IL. I haven't looked up Burr's sutler tokens - did he issue any? Can anyone provide images of Burr scrip or tokens? Are there other numismatic connections with Luman Burr, who was a friend of Abraham Lincoln's? -Editor
