SOME RECENT COIN DESIGNS: APRIL 20, 2014

Here's a sampling of some new coin designs forwarded by ultramodern numismatist Pabitra Saha. Thanks! -Editor

I like this one. Although I don't ordinarily care for flat, stylized designs, I think this works well. -Editor

Finland 10 Euro Literacy Coin

Now this one leaves me scratching my head. The date side (obverse) shows the symbol for infinity within a circle of 1's and 0's, indicating numeracy. The next ring shows musical notes, another form of literacy. The next ring of dot clusters looks like Braille. It's a clean design, but feels lightweight. I don't get the symbols on the other side. Can anyone enlighten me? What is this? -Editor

2015 Lithuanian 2 Euros

Lithuania 2 Euros 2015

There's nothing outstanding about this one, but it's a pleasing design overall. I like how the designs extend into the outer ring, making them "pop out" a bit. -Editor

Italy: Gioachino Rossini 10 Euro Silver Coin

Italy Rossini 10 Euro coin obverse Italy Rossini 10 Euro coin reverse

Composer Gioachino Rossini wrote 39 operas during his career, including The Barber of Seville. Rossini’s signature appears across the shoulder of his bust on the obverse. The reverse features a view within a theater "with a magpie in flight recalling an allegory of the opera La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie)."

I really like this one - it's a beautiful coin. -Editor
