Buyers beware! Brothers Philip and Harry Mernick of London forwarded links to web
pages offering fake gold coins produced in China. This modern coin fakery is nothing new, but over
time its scope seems to grow and its methods improve. Their thickly gold-plated tungsten copies
very closely mimic the proper size and weight of the genuine gold coins. They claim their products
"can pass any real gold test, for example acid test, X-ray test or scratch test etc."
Here are some excerpts from the company's pages on Alibaba. -Editor

Philip adds
We saw an “1887 gold £5” today that could well have been from this source. These are very
dangerous, Harold has trawled U-tube comments and it appears that the only way, currently, of
distinguishing genuine from fake is the old fashioned method of “ringing” a coin. The fakes being
sintered Tungsten rather than truly solid don’t ring in the way a gold coin should. I haven’t heard
it demonstrated however.
