THE NEWMANS GO OUT ON A LIMB

Newman Numismatic Portal Project Coordinator Len Augsburger provided the following report on an exchange between Eric and Evelyn Newman and Ken Lowe of The Money Tree. Thanks. Pictured is an August 15, 1987 note from Evelyn Newman to Ken Lowe. -Editor

Eric and Evelyn Newman Comment on the Money Tree’s Out on a Limb

August 15, 1987 note from Evelyn Newman to Ken Lowe Several weeks ago we noted the addition of the Money Tree’s (Ken Lowe and Myron Xenos) house organ, Out on a Limb, to the Newman Portal. The inaugural edition of this periodical featured a brilliant description of a 1987 American Numismatic Society member event hosted in Cleveland by R. Henry and Emery May Norweb. Lowe’s observations on the life of the upper crust made for amusing reading, and a recent find in the Newman correspondence demonstrates that Eric and Evelyn Newman (who might have hosted a similar event in St. Louis) were equally entertained. Eric wrote to Lowe and Xenos on August August 17, 1987:

Having served on the Council of A.N.S. with great dignity for a score of years … I am shocked at your irreverence for the cultivation dinner you attended. I am so astounded that I let my wife read your diatribe and she wrote you the enclosed note. Please shock us more often. We are really trying to do anything numismatics deserves in the way of cultural support, scholarly administration and human interest and encouragement. We hope increased support will come from many of you…..Thank you for lightening our life……

Evelyn added:

I’ve been a Newman for 47 years [Eric and Evelyn were married in November 1939] and “Out on a Limb” has made me laugh out loud for the first time about anything remotely related to all that stuff in the basement and attic. Your evening at the Norweb scene would make a great operetta. Don’t count on coming to our house. We’ll meet at Denny’s. Keep up the fun. It’s so refreshing.
