"They laughed when I asked the U.S. Mint about the 1964 Morgan dollar. But then four coin experts found the tools in the U.S. Mint vault.... The National Collector's Mint announces a special
striking of the 1964 Morgan dollar... "
So says the narrator of this video add for a non-circulating Cook Islands silver coin mimicking the phantom 1964 U.S. Morgan Dollar.
As E-Sylum readers are aware, the obverse and reverse models for a 1964 Morgan dollar, plus hubs and master dies for the coin were discovered at the Philadelphia Mint in July 2015 by John Dannreuther and Dennis
Tucker, in a group that also included Q. David Bowers and David Sundman. Obverse and reverse models for the 1964 Peace dollar were also found.
There is no connection whatsoever between the U.S. Mint, the actual hubs and dies, and these silver-plated souvenirs. But it's a fun historical re-enactment, I suppose. -Editor
The coin that didn’t exist lives as a Non-Circulating Cook Islands’ Legal Tender Morgan Dollar clad in 71 mgs of .999 Pure Silver!
Dennis Tucker adds:
I like how they portray us pawing through a broom closet cluttered with piles of “coin stuff”!
Regarding the luxuriously silver-plated coin offered for sale in the ad, I shall withhold judgment.
Here's a photo of the real-life researchers taken just moments after their discovery. -Editor
