STUDY EXAMINES PRINT VS ELECTRONIC BOOKS

In the but-we-already-knew-that department, numismatic bibliophiles will appreciate this study confirming that the psychological experience of owning an e-book is significantly different from that of owning a print book. Here's an excerpt from a Forbes article about the study. -Editor

British library bookshelves The study found that research participants "described being more emotionally attached to physical books, and said they use physical books to establish a sense of self and belonging," according to the University of Arizona. Book lovers have long lamented the loss of "book smell" that accompanies the use of e-books, and participants also touched on other important aspects of book ownership: the use of bookshelves to curate a persona and the ability to augment the pages of a book with marginal notes, in particular.

Participants also "expressed frustration" with the lack of options with regard to file moving and sharing. Aggressive DRM practices have severely restricted readers' ability to share e-books with friends. The industry has long felt word-of-mouth marketing is crucial to book success, and the restrictions that accompany e-books tamp down that behavior.

Ultimately, according to the study's lead author, Sabrina Helm, e-books and print books are entirely different products with different functions--the former being much more utilitarian and service-focused and the latter being more sensory-rich.
