Welcome to the Numismatic Bibliomania Society
mailing #10, December 4, 1998.

NEW MEMBERS

John Adams, Michael Niebruegge, and Cal Wilson have joined
  the mailing list. Welcome aboard.

DOTY'S BOOK ON MATTHEW BOULTON

Dr. Doty reports that the Smithsonian bookshop may soon
stockhis book, titled 'The Soho Mint & the Industrialization
of Money'. Contact Norma Ryan at (phone) 1-202-287-3563 or
(email) nryan@retail.si.edu. If list members begin requesting
the work, "you would greatly cheer, and spiritually benefit,
  dear Sir,

                        your obdt hmbl Servt:

                                     R:D

[look, you live in the eighteenth century long
enough, you begin writing like that.] "

LIMITED EDITIONS

John Keele asked, "I have seen many ads for limited-edition
books. Are these worth the increased price? How few copies
need to be in existence before a book is considered 'rare'?"

My reply: In numismatics, it doesn't take a lot of copies
for a book to be common. 1,000 copies of a Steven King novel
would be a rare edition, but in numismatic literature, that's
common. 300 might be "scarce" 100 or less would be "rare",
  in my opinion.

  I doubt there will be shortages of opinions among our readership;
  what do you think?

THE WIDE REACH OF THE WEB

The power of the internet to bring people together is
one of the many benefits resulting from our web site and
mailing list. The internet has helped us reach many new
and former members in recent weeks.

We are very glad to welcome NBS charter member Cal Wilson
to the mailing list. An early and active member in the
society, Cal dealt in numismatic literature,
held several literature sales and published "Wilson's
Numismatic Repository", an important source of information
   on American numismatic literature.

In addition to Cal, we have John Adams on board now, too.
A longtime numismatic bibliophile, in 1982 he authored the
two-volume work "United States Numismatic Literature",
covering the subject of early auction catalogs and cataloguers.

FEATURED WEB SITE

Today's feature is the Chinese Numismatic Web Site,
recommended by reader Scott Semans. "Though specialized in
its subject area, it is beginning to serve as a focus for
Oriental numismatics in the West as there is no widely
distributed regular journal in the field.
