The E-Sylum: Volume 8, Number 16, April 17, 2005, Article 5 THE CARDINAL SPELLMAN COLLECTION Arthur Shippee writes: "Events like the Conclave pull trivia out of the woodwork, like this about Cardinals and coins. While browsing Donald Hall's "The Oxford Book of American Literary Anecdotes" (OUP, 1981), I came across this note about John O'Hara, recorded by his publisher, Bennett Cerf ("At Random", 1977). Cardinal Spellman had complained to Cerf about O'Hara's language, so Cerf wanted them to meet and get to know each other. O'Hara proved charming, and the meeting was a success. "They took to each other at once. We had a wonderful time .... After lunch, the Cardinal insisted on showing us his coin collection in the Archbishopric." Was Spellman's collection a noted one?" [The Cardinal Spellman collection was cataloged in two parts by Harmer Rooke, but was eventually disposed of by private sale. -Editor] Wayne Homren, Editor The Numismatic Bibliomania Society is a non-profit organization promoting numismatic literature.
