The E-Sylum: Volume 8, Number 27, July 3, 2005, Article 21 NOVEL COUNTERFEITING ARGUMENT On June 30, the Associated Press reported this story from Frago, North Dakota: "A lawyer for two sisters accused of making counterfeit money says his clients deserve a lighter sentence -- because the bills were so bad." "Attorney Monty Mertz argued at a federal court hearing that guidelines call for a lighter sentence when counterfeit money is so obvious that clerks are unlikely to accept it. He called the bills "Monopoly money.'' Secret Service Agent John Kelly testified that even though the bills were poorly made, most clerks at larger stores would take them."
