The E-Sylum: Volume 9, Number 24, June 11, 2006, Article 38 ON HOBGOBLINS A subscriber writes: "I found the quote about 'hobgoblins' in last week's E-sylum intriguing. I asked my brother about it. He thought it was one of H.L. Mencken's famous lines. Then I consulted Bartlett's and found out it was from Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1841 essay, Self Reliance: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do . . . . Speak what you think today in hard words and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict everything you said today."
