The E-Sylum: Volume 10, Number 3, January 21, 2007, Article 4 ESSENTIAL BOOKS ON U.S. MEDALS, AND WHERE THE GAPS ARE Dave Bowers writes: "I enjoyed the recent items about Loubat. When anyone asks how to learn about medals, I always recommend the “big three” for a core group: Betts, Loubat, and Julian. "There are some highly important medals not listed, as Betts covers pre-federal medals, Julian covers U.S. Mint medals 1792-1892, and Loubat is mainly about congressional medals. The 1787 Columbia and Washington medal and the 1858 S.S. Central America medal (Captain Herndon, and the 1857 disaster) are two of them. And, of course, the field of 20th century medals is another great subject not presently covered by even a handy introductory guide, let alone an in-depth treatment." [The Stack's Ford Sale catalogs will be a great interim reference on the topic until new references are published. Is anyone at work on manuscripts to fill the gaps Dave mentions? -Editor] Wayne Homren, Editor The Numismatic Bibliomania Society is a non-profit organization promoting numismatic literature.
