The E-Sylum: Volume 10, Number 32, August 12, 2007, Article 9 ON THE USE OF MARIA THERESA THALERS IN SAUDI ARABIA Regarding the email scam involving Maria Theresa thalers discussed last week, Jim Downey writes: "I was stationed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1997-98. I witnessed more than one transaction involving Bedouins in the markets where Maria Theresa thalers were used as the medium of exchange. They were available from money changers for 30 SR. I bought one as a souvenir even though I could get them in the US for less. The money changers that I talked to about them insisted they were from France. I tried to explain their origins but they insisted. I later learned that they considered all coins that were not of Arab origin to be from France. No one could explain why."
