Last week we quoted an article interviewing Adolf Burger, a survivor of the WWII Operation Bernhard Nazi concentration camp counterfeiting scheme known: However, the counterfeiters pierced the notes right through the Queen's face on the notes – "nothing a loyal English citizen would ever do," laughed Burger.
Tom DeLorey writes: The queen? I always thought that that was the figure of Britannia, since Great Britain was ruled by a King at the time. Of course, a German citizen would not necessarily know that.
Tom's quite right - sorry I didn't flag that last week. The counterfeited notes feature Britannia, not the Queen. Next time I pull my Bernhard notes from the vault, I'll look for the holes. That would prove nothing today of course, but it's an interesting detail right directly from one of the men responsible. -Editor
