As is often the case, while researching one thing I stumbled upon this illustrated article in Harper's New Weekly Magazine (vol. 13, 1856, author unidentified) which might be of interest to your readers.
The eight-page article is an interesting read, set up in the form of a yarn told by an old man about the development of the Great Seal. While in the form of fiction, it is based on fact and includes images of a number of proposed versions of the design, including the Jefferson version, above. Heavily involved is numismatist Pierre du Simitiere, whose version is shown below. Check it out - thanks!
