As is often the case, while researching one thing I stumbled upon this illustrated article in Harper's New Weekly Magazine (vol. 13, 1856, author unidentified) which might be of interest to your readers.

Great Seal of US Jefferson Design

The eight-page article is an interesting read, set up in the form of a yarn told by an old man about the development of the Great Seal. While in the form of fiction, it is based on fact and includes images of a number of proposed versions of the design, including the Jefferson version, above. Heavily involved is numismatist Pierre du Simitiere, whose version is shown below. Check it out - thanks! -Editor
