There's some great information to be had in various regional numismatic publications, and I often find something of interest in Dick Hanscom's Alaskan Token Collector and Polar Numismatist. Here's an item from the September 2011 issue about a neat medal sent in by another E-Sylum subscriber, Harry Waterson.

This has to be the finest medal commemorating the exploration achievements of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. We have seen this before, but Harry Waterson brought it to our attention again. The following is from the eBay description.
"Commemorating the conquest of the Poles / by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd / and his associates" / Presented by the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America. / May 9, 1926 (flight over the North Pole) November 29, 1929 (flight over the South Pole). Edge marked: William C Haines Meteorologist Byrd Antarctic Expedition 1928-30 Whitehead-Hoag. Minted by Whitehead-Hoag, designed by Julio Kilenyi (ed note: see "Medal of the Month Foundation" December 2010, page 90). Sterling silver (ed note: although it may be silver plated) 6.7 ounces 3.25 inches (about 84mm).
eBay PR $933."
