DR. R.H.T. LAENNEC – INVENTOR OF THE STETHOSCOPE, 1982. 77.6mm. Cast. Bronze.
Allen Sloane, Sc. Uncirculated. Obverse with a bust to the right and the dates 1781/ 1826 behind the head.
Legend: R. H. T. LAENNEC M.D. INVENTOR OF STETHOSCOPE. Reverse is inscribed: A/ WINDOW/
IN/ THE/ BREAST and shows the first model of the stethoscope being held with one end on a bare chest
Dr. Laennec's "Window in the Breast" device is an odd-looking thing, but an important milestone in medical history. I guess one reason this resonated with me is that I spent time during college selling stethoscopes to doctors while working part time at an off-campus pharmacy.
