ALASKA'S FORT KNOX GOLD MINE

If you're curious about where some of the gold for new coins comes from, see this article Dick Hanscom forwarded about the Fort Knox gold mine in Alaska. Thanks! -Editor

Fort Knox mine gold bar Fort Knox gold mine is located about 25 miles northeast of Fairbanks in the Fish Creek drainage, which has been mined for more than a century.

It is owned by Kinross and operated by subsidiary Fairbanks Gold Mining Inc.

You won’t find any gold nuggets lying around — the gold at Fort Knox is microscopic — which requires operations on a huge scale to make it economic. Higher grade ore is run through a milling process to extract the gold.

To appreciate the scale of this massive operation, look closely at the below photo. Those tiny specks are big dump trucks. -Editor
