THE ONS' BEST AND WORST IN NUMISMATICS

The year end is a traditional time for making lists. David Pickup forwarded the following conclusions from a discussion at a recent meeting of the Oxford Numismatic Society inspired by the Coin of the Year awards. Their conclusions have a decidedly English flavor (why not?), but I find it hard to disagree with many of them. What do readers think? -Editor

  • Best longest lasting design – Pistrucci St. George and the dragon,
  • Best portrait – George III bullhead,
  • Worst commemorative – Churchill crown (far too many produced, low relief and poor design)
  • Best denomination – half crown. (Members remembered what it was like to get a halfcrown pocket money)
  • Worst size- modern 5 pence - too small
  • Worst metal – zinc as it turns to dust
  • Worst coin error or variety- the dateless 20p
  • Best reverse design –William IV halfcrown
  • Best UK modern coin since 1971 - millennium 5 pounds
  • Best series of coins to collect, Greek if you have deep pockets.
  • Worst series to collect - most modern
  • Best designer – anyone called Wyon
