This week I learned of the passing last year of Laurese Katen, wife and partner of numismatic literature dealer Frank Katen. -Editor
Dave Hirt writes:
She was the clerk at Frank's sales reading out the mail bids and noting the buyer numbers. Her hobby was raising and showing
miniature Schnauzer show dogs.
David Gladfelter writes:
In addition to working with Frank in the Katen numismatic book business, Laurese bred and exhibited championship schnauzer dogs. Her
picture with one of her dogs is on the cover of the Katens' 78th public and mail bid auction sale catalog of the world wide
periodical section of their library ... Laurese, Frank's second wife, was about 10 years younger than he, who died on his 98th
birthday in 2001.
In the 1990s Laurese was editor of the MANA Journal published by the former Middle Atlantic Numismatic Association. In 1997 MANA and
the former Great Eastern Numismatic Association (GENA) merged into the Eastern States Numismatic Association. She wrote an illustrated
booklet on the porcelain gambling tokens of Siam, published in 2002. They lived in rural Silver Spring, MD, where they had a home office.
They were good friends of the late John Huffman and Gordon Frost.
Many years ago I had the pleasure of visiting the Katens and touring their numismatic library. I went down to Maryland with John Burns,
and met up with Dave Hirt and his wife Molly. We had a nice dinner with the Katens at a nearby restaurant, then went to their house.
Neither Dave or I will forget how one of Laurese's Schnauzers bit John on the hand when he tried to pat it. We ribbed him about it
for years. -Editor
