CBS FEATURES U.S. MINT ARTISTS AND ENGRAVERS

Did anyone catch this show this morning? Earlier in the week the U.S. Mint sent out a press release about today's television segment featuring artists and engravers at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. -Editor

The Money Issue The show “CBS Sunday Morning” will air two segments this Sunday, 12 April, that may be of interest to you. The first segment will focus on the artists and engravers in Philadelphia and the role they play in the coin-making process. The segment will also look at that process, as well as some of the Philadelphia Mint’s history.

A second segment will look at the penny and the debate about whether or not it should be eliminated.

“CBS Sunday Morning” is hosted by Charles Osgood and airs at 9 am Eastern Time. Check your local listings to see when it airs in your region.

DESIGN: The look of currency
In a world obsessed with earning money, and spending it, it's understandable why you might not take a minute to examine your spare change. But if you did, you might find those coins are miniature works of art. Anna Werner meets the man who designs our state quarters and commemorative coins.

COINS: Making sense of pennies
Is the penny worth saving? Every year the copper coin buys less, while continuing to aggravate shoppers and cashiers. So should the U.S. follow Canada's lead and dump ours?

Correspondent Nancy Giles explores the history and the pros and cons of the humble penny, the coin we love to hate.

Turns out Matthew Wittmann of the American Numismatic Society was featured in the segment on the cent. Here's a link to his ANS blog item about the show. -Editor
