FARMER'S MARKET MONEY SUBSTITUTES

Jeff Starck of Coin World published a nice article in the June 15, 2015 edition (p38-39) about the growing number of money substitutes appearing across the country. Great title: Becoming a Numismatic 'Locavore': Farmer's Market Money Substitutes Increase as Local Food Demand Rises. The article isn't on the CW web site (yet, anyway), but Jeff kindly supplied these images. Thanks! -Editor

Portland-Oregon-Farmers-Market-5-dollar-token Jeff writes:

As I write in the article, “Now that many farmers’ markets around the country are opening for another season, the money-minded have a new crop of collectibles to consider. In recent years, the use of wooden nickels, metal tokens, and paper scrip at farmers’ markets has increased, leaving many items for the intrepid collector to track down. And it gives the phrase “paper or plastic” a whole new interpretation.”

The E-Sylum has touched on these items in recent years and my love of farmers markets and the hobby led me to explore this topic. I can’t help but be a little excited to share it with other collectors.

Congratulations on a great article. If you're not a Coin World subscriber (Why Not?), look for it to appear on the CW web site at a later date. Regular E-Sylum   readers know I advocate for researching and documenting numismatic items in the here and now, while they're actively being used. Twenty or fifty years down the road people may actively collect these items, but unless someone documents their stories NOW, there may be little information to be had. Just think how much richer our numismatic tradition would be had more people taken Jeff's approach back in the day, interviewing issuers, designers, makers, users and collectors of then-commonplace coins, tokens and medals. -Editor
