Regarding last week's item on C. F. Gunther, David Lange writes:
Among the many items in C. F. Gunther's Civil War collection were the two half dollars placed upon Abraham Lincoln's eyes at the time his death. These coins, dated 1854 and 1861,
respectively, are still held by the Chicago Historical Society. I wrote about this episode for my column in The Numismatist three years ago, and it may be viewed also at NGC's website,
too.
