Speaking of coin design copyrights, I was surprised in recent months to see advertisements for reproductions of Frank Gasparro's 1977 design for a Liberty Dollar coin. It's a great design that never made it to production.

Here's an ad that appears in the August 1, 2017 Numismatic News on p82. This is an interesting idea and the makers do indeed place the word "COPY" on the pieces as required by law. But I know that in recent years the Mint began copyrighting its designs to prevent such commercial efforts. When did that practice start?
