1796 Woodbrodge Alms House Penny Token
A nice piece for its age. The "Alms Houses" are what caught my eye. I haven't seen many alms house tokens or medals. These were poorhouses, build and operated by charities to house the poor, elderly or infirm who couldn't otherwise afford a place to live.
OBVERSE: THO. SEKFORD ESQ. FOUNDED WOODBRIDGE ALMS HOUSES 1587
REVERSE: AT WHOSE EXPENSE COUNTY MAPS WERE FIRST ENGRAVED 1574
This Conder token was produced by printer and bookseller Robert Loder of Woodbridge (Suffolk, England).
So what does the latin motto “ORATIONES . ET . ELEEMOS . ASCENDVMT . IN . MEMORIAM . CORAM . DEO.” mean?
