1825 Charleston Servant Slave Hire Tag
1825 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Tag Number 2212. Diamond-shape tag with a hole at top for suspension, clipped corners, 68 mm across. The
punched inscription reads: "Charleston/ 1825/ Servant/ No 2212/ Lafar". J. J. Lafar was the Sheriff of Charleston who supplemented his
income by producing slave tags for a number of years. Slightly wavy surface, but a choice example overall with very pleasing dark green patina.
From the upcoming August 25-26 Heritage Americana & Political sale. Fascinating relic of the slave era. -Editor
