HERITAGE TOKEN AND MEDAL SELECTIONS

Here are some tokens and medals that caught my eye in the August 15, 2022 Heritage sale. -Editor

Lot 91098: 1861 Bombardment of Fort Sumter Medal

1861 Bombardment of Fort Sumter Medal obverse 1861 Bombardment of Fort Sumter Medal reverse
1861 Bombardment of Fort Sumter, Silver, So-Called Dollar, HK-11f, Unique, MS64 Prooflike NGC. An early, popular, and rare Civil War so-called dollar issue, the Bombardment of Fort Sumter medal is listed in the printed Second Edition of Hibler-Kappen as HK-11 (white metal), HK-11b (brass), and HK-11c (copper), all as Rarity-7. To the great surprise of exonumismatists, NGC in 2017 identified an example struck in silver. Designated as HK-11f, It remains unique in silver to this day, though NGC suspects that a few others may exist in silver but have yet to be discovered. Brilliant and sharply struck with a few delicate obverse hairlines.

Lot 91443: 1858 Pioneer Baseball Club Token

1858 Pioneer Baseball Club Token obverse 1858 Pioneer Baseball Club Token reverse
1858 Pioneer Baseball Club, Springfield, MA, Rulau Mass-528, Musante JAB-1, MS61 NGC. Silver-plated white metal, plain edge, 32 mm. A famous early baseball token from one of the best-known 19th century token medalists. J.A. Bolen was born in New York City but spent most of his life in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he died in 1906. His baseball token was his first issue. The mintage was 125 white metal pieces and 75 copper pieces, though far fewer have survived. The white metal pieces tend to be in circulated grades, but the present example is unworn. The lavender, walnut-brown, and powder-blue surfaces are lightly abraded. The rims show a few ticks and a small depression at 1:30.
