discussed highlights of
the Richard August Collection of Early American medals in their Spring 2025 Showcase Auction.

Anchoring our Spring Showcase Auction's wide selection of Numismatic Americana is the Richard August Collection of Early American medals and Washingtoniana. Mr. August, a connoisseur and a true gentleman in every sense, assembled over the course of more than half a century one of the most important collections of Early American medals to cross the auction block. While some collectors seek completeness in various series, Dick's approach was to buy what looked interesting. In following his advice, I reviewed the catalog and selected a few highlights that stand out. While perhaps not as valuable as his beautiful silver Libertas Americana medal, these are all rare and stand out on their own merits as highlights in this incredible collection.
Lot 1143. The Kittanning Destroyed medal in Silver. PCGS has graded this famed rarity MS-63 and it has been sold at auction just twice before: in Jaques Schulman's March 1930 sale and then in our March 1981 sale of the Garrett Collection.
Lot 1154. A superb near-Gem quality 1760 Montreal Taken medal in silver, graded MS-64 by PCGS. The finest we have offered in the last two decades.
Lot 1164. One of just three collectible examples of the 1763 Charleston Social Club medal. Of the nine enumerated in our description, six of the known examples are impounded at Yale, the ANS, the British Museum, Massachusetts Historical Society and other institutional collections. Acquired privately 40 years ago, this is the first ever auction appearance for this specimen.
Lot 1180. The finest seen 1777 B. Franklin of Philadelphia medal. Ex George Fuld and the plate piece in his historic work published in the December 1958 issue of The Numismatist.
Lot 1194. A lovely Mint State 1782 Dutch-American Treaty of Commerce medal in silver. This scarce issue is the first medal to ever depict the Stars and Stripes.
Lot 1220. A spectacular original silver John Eager Howard at Cowpens medal. Beautifully toned and one of only four in private hands it is a rarity of utmost importance.
Lot 1265. A lovely bronze original Washington Before Boston medal. One of the most popular of the Revolutionary War themed medals.
Lot 1282. A lovely 1792 Washinton President Pattern, the Ellsworth-Garrett coin, which ranks high on the condition census for this extremely rare 1792 pattern issue.
Lot 1314. An amazing George Washington Funeral "shell" medal, issued "for the ladies" by Jacob Perkins. Among the highest graded examples of 17 enumerated in our description, a number of which are impounded in institutional collections.
Lot 1326. The Woodward-Bushnell-Garrett-August 1805 Commander in Chief, Armies of the United States medal in silver. Fewer than a dozen known, three of which are impounded and unavailable for collectors. Boasting the oldest provenance of any in private hands, this is also the Rulau-Fuld plate coin.
This is just a handful of the incredible rarities from the Richard August Collection in our Spring Showcase Auction. Be sure to review all the great pieces. If you have any questions regarding any of these spectacular and historic pieces, do not hesitate to reach out to any of our experts.
