This segment discusses my time after the Pittsburgh ANA on Saturday, August 29.
The morning began with the wonderful annual breakfast meeting of the Rittenhouse Society. It's always a pleasure to gather with numismatic scholars to catch up on their recent work and personal lives, and learn about upcoming projects.
I went back to my hotel to check out, but I wasn't leaving Pittsburgh. I was staying until Sunday for the Celebration of Life for my old friend Pat McBride. My hotel wouldn't extend my stay a day without extracting a $400-$600 ransom (the price was different every time I asked). So I made a reservation elsewhere.
Having Saturday afternoon available gave me an opportunity to revisit my old stomping grounds. After driving through all the new housing development in the city's Strip District, I stopped for lunch at Taipei, a favorite Chinese restaurant in Fox Chapel. I had a nice meal and snapped this photo on the way out.
From there I drove through the neighborhood where I grew up, then took a scenic tour across the city's residential interior, passing through multiple neighborhoods en route to my new hotel. The city looked great, with new development and renovated properties throughout. My destination was Fifth Avenue in the Shadyside neighborhood, close to Carnegie Mellon University and my alma matter the University of Pittsburgh. My new room (priced under $200) was at a bed and breakfast called Mansions on Fifth. Not too shabby.

A Walk Around the Neighborhood
My hotel was a renovated home on Pittsburgh's Millionaire's Row. I always loved the architecture when walking or biking through the neighborhood. Here are some photos I took before dinner. Wow!
I could share dozens more. I had a delightful stay and the next time you travel to Pittsburgh, consider some lodging off the beaten path.
In the next diary segment I do some more exploring on Sunday before the event honoring Pat McBride (aka Ben Franklin).
