The E-Sylum: Volume 5, Number 15, April 7, 2002, Article 7 HOWARD GIBBS MEXICAN SUD NUMBERING SYSTEM Bob Dunfield writes: "Sincere thanks to all who helped in trying to solve the Gibbs SUD numbering system. Unfortunately, the system of identifying varieties of the Mexican SUD coins, 1/2 Real - 8 Reales, 1811 -1814, was likely part of his personal notes on these issues. It still seems strange, though, that Schulman would have published Gibbs' numbers if collectors could not reference them, or understand them! In the process of identifying numismatists that have used numbering systems for identifying these coins, I have found several others, but no single publication by any of them that identifies the coins, and matches numbers with plated coins. Superior's Munoz sale, # 4, June 7, 1982, presented many SUD and other War for Independence coins, and most of them listed "Vogt numbers" and "Elizondo numbers." Also, in the 'Julius Guttag Collection of Latin American Coins', Arranged by Edgar H. Adams, 1929, and Quarterman Publications, 1974, has many SUD pieces, all identified by "numbered dies." Groups of 8 Real SUDs are plated, with the words underneath..."Seventh Die, Eighth Die, etc..! For coins without pictures, they are listed simply by lot number, date, value, and the "Die Number." It would seem important that at one time, these coins were identified, described, and plated in a reference book, such that collectors would be familiar with Guttag's lot number 2978, an eight real SUD described simply as "Eighteenth Die"! If such a reference book exists, I would gladly purchase it for a reasonable sum! If there is anything separately published by any of these noted numismatists, it would be a magnificent find for me! Once again, my sincere thanks to all who helped! I think, however, that we have uncovered more questions to be answered in the process. This is good news, though, because with so many different numbering and die numbering systems out there, the chance of finding a complete one is much greater!"
