The E-Sylum: Volume 9, Number 27, July 2, 2006, Article 35 ISLE OF MAN COIN COLLECTION TO BE SOLD Dick Johnson forwarded this article last week - sorry for the delay. If anyone is familiar with the results of the sale, or could comment on the sale catalogue, please let us know. "One of the most famous collections of Manx coins is set to go under the hammer and it could fetch almost £50,000. The collection of coins, tokens and vouchers was gathered by former hotelier Hilary Guard over 15 years. It was sold in the mid-1980s and has been in a private collection in the Island ever since. However, London auction house Spinks has confirmed the 189-piece collection – still known as the Hilary F. Guard collection – will go under the hammer next Thursday. 'I think he was one of only two people interested in collecting Manx coins in the 1960s and he became rather obsessed with it.' Charles said his father's favourite was a Murray penny, which was a 'particular prize because it was extremely rare'. Hilary finished collecting in 1978, when he and wife Nan retired from a career in tourism that had seen them take the helm of the Grasmere and Hydro hotels in Douglas."
