While non-numismatic, this Craigslist offering illustrates one of the many old-time uses of coins - a coin-operated natural gas meter!
-Editor
This Very Rare, COIN OPERATED, GAS METER is over 100 YEARS OLD, and was primarily used in Apartment Buildings. Tenants could simply
"Pre-Pay" for their Gas with a Quarter, and get over a weeks worth of lighting, heating, and cooking. The Gas Meter was Mfg. by
the D. McDonald & Co. from Albany, N.Y. - the Pre-Payment Attachment is a Glover No. 2, and the adjustable Meter Bar is by the Stevens
Co. This is a real museum piece and is in great condition.
Neat item. Anybody remember these? Wonder how many shiny uncirculated Barber quarters were dropped into that slot? Prices have gone up a
bit... -Editor
